Dear reader

Where to start...let me see... These few weeks were'nt as productive as I thought it would be so the stress levels are on the increase.

This year I have been shifted around so many times that my head is spinning. I have worked with most of the project leaders in the office I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing, just wheb I start getting the hang of something I need to help out somewhere else.

I have been notified by the pesident of the firm that I am starting a new project as of 16 August. I'm not sure if I should be nervous or scared. The project enquires me to do room loading, which means I place equipment into a room. Sometimes I wonder if Im doing my internship for architecture or interior design.

Oh well whats the point in stressing now the year is almost at its end.

Hey there...

So far I am really not doing all to good when it comes to my tech work, especially when I compare my work to last year.Technology have never been my strong point and clever me only found out today that I can post my blog via my phone. DUHHH!

These few weeks have been exhausting, with the work load getting more and more, the deadlines are never ending. Because I have been so behind with all my tech work trying to catch up is really difficult, but I have only myself to blame.

I have been trying my utmost best to do the same quality of work that I pride myself on, but in this short space of time I can only pray that it all works out.

Keep well and see you soon...

Hey all...

Just retuned from an exausting day at site in Hermanus, not much to see though, still digging trenches. They've started building a wall and its not even one meter high but already some problems has come up. Fortunately it is nothing that can't be fixed. I never realised how stressful it could be in the building industy, especially for the architects. Your designing and drawing work is never done. Even when the building is in the process of construction major changes could arise, from the reposition of a column to a whole room being added, but everything always needs to stay in the budget never forget that rule.

Each time I'm surrounded by all these proffesionals I feel like I hav'nt accomplish anything with regards to architecture. There are so many aspects of this proffesion that I hopefully in my life would be able to master. but for now I'm just trying to take in as much as I can and enjoying the journey to becoming a Starchitect...:-)

This has been an awesome week so far I really have no complaints from my work side just  need to start getting serious about my tech work again and my two days of leave this week will give me the time to catch up.

First site visit :-)

So far all I have been working on in the office is "Mark-ups" which really does not expose one to actual architectural designing.

Mark-ups are amending and fixing small mistakes that were made in the process of placing equipment in allocated rooms. after 3 months of doing this I started to feel frustated because Iam not getting the experience and proper exsposure to help me grow. The amount of work is hectic and forces us to work overtime regularly and this week I worked two nights in a row.

But I think there are better things ahead, because i went to my first site visit this week. The purpose of the site visit was to show me the process of construction. at first I was intimidated to be in a meeting with so many professionals. myself and a fellow colleague (which is an architect) were the only females present. The room (container) was filled with all the engineers involved in the construction of the Hermanus hospital upgrade.

The tension and frustration was piling up, because there seems to be a delay and the client's patients are wearing thin, but never the less it was entertaining to watch grown men arguing. :-)

After the meeting we inspected the site and recorded each and every change which happened since the previous meeting/site visit. There isn't much happening above ground at the moment, because they are still digging trenches, hopefully there will be more to see at the next visit.

Inspirational week...

This week has been really inspiring. It started off being just a normal week where you come to work do what you need to do to get through the day and then leave for home again. Tuesday the same routine was followed but, from Wednesday onwards it was a different story.

Wednesday: My morning started awful, because I was half hour late for work and it was all thanks to the great service of metro-rail. Straight after our tea break at about 11h00 there was a fire drill and the whole building had to be evacuated. We had to walk down 12 flights of stairs which has my carves aching still.( I think it's a sign that I should start exercising ). But then someone arrived at the office that I never thought I would have the oppertunity of meeting. Mike Nightingale, the founder of Nightingale Associates an internationally established architecural firm, just being in the same room as him inspired me. At lunch time we had a office meeting where Mr. Nightingale gave us a presentation of a new design system he want's to apply to his offices all over the world, ours being one of them. The presentation was titled "THINK" and that was exactly what is was about. Thinking with all your senses when in the process of designing something. Thinking of how people react to a space, how they will feel, what they would see, smell, touch. It made me understand more what to do for my hub project, that we should be designing our structure with all those elements in mind. My day ended well eventhough I didn't expect it to.

On Thursday I had a lunch meeting with my mentor and I never expected it to help me so much, speaking to someone with all these years of experience can really be intimidating, but just picking his brain about certain things and him giving me advice on my project encourages me to do better and be better. After the meeting I had more confidence to start with my design process.

Today is really exciting, at 15h30 we having a cherette where all work is down and the whole office is participating in designing something, I am not sure what yet, because we only getting the brief at 15h30, but we get an hour and a half to design it and there will be voting to see which group came up with the best design. The winning team will win a free meal at Gourmet Burgers. How fun is that!!!!
